Have you noticed automated license plate readers (ALPRs) mounted on utility poles? Maybe you’ve seen them but didn’t quite know what they were for? They are getting information about cars that pass by. Now they are poised to gather even more info. However, they won’t just be getting information about cars. ALPRs will be able to integrate information from personal devices like cell phones, tablets, computers, watches, and even headphones. What is this all about? Let’s chat.

So, what are automated license plate readers?

Automated license plate readers, or ALPRs for short, are basically what their name says. They are cameras that focus on the license plate, capture an image, and record in a database where the license plate was seen. Beyond that, the systems have also captured information about the car like make, model, and even special features like the presence of a roof rack. These ALPRs have become an integral part of law enforcement, allowing investigators to track persons of interest in cars.

How can my personal devices be detected?

Your personal devices are emitting signals almost all the time. These signals allow your devices to connect. Your phone uses signals to connect to the wireless networks. Your Bluetooth headphones emit another type of signal so they can connect with devices sending them audio. These signals often carry unique information ensuring that the right devices are connecting.

Why would they integrate this information?

As I said, law enforcement investigators are using ALPRs to theoretically track people, however they are really tracking cars. Information on personal devices can connect the car to the occupants. If they notice a pattern of the car showing up in the same locations as the personal devices, then they can better prove the person was in the car. A fact that could make or break an investigation.
