In my last post, we discussed the ban on states regulating AI in the Big Beautiful Bill. But, there’s more about AI in the bill. There are several places where the government is looking to invest in AI. Let’s get into it.
Where is the government planning to spending money on AI ?
The bill has references to AI sprinkled in several places.
- $450 million for AI enabled naval ship building
- $124 million or AI enabled testing of low cost weapons
- $145 million for developing AI for unmanned aerial and naval one-way attack systems
- $250 million for advancement of AI ecosystem
- $250 million for AI in the Cyber Command
- $200 million for AI enabled audits in the Department of Defense
- $500 million for use commercial AI systems to update Federal information technology (IT)
- $1 billion for non-intrusive inspection equipment at the border (including AI and machine learning enabled methods)
Another section does not give a spending amount, but does call for AI to be used to better monitor Medicare for improper payments.
What’s an AI ecosystem?
That is a good question. I was not sure about that one either. So I decided to ask ChatGPT for a concise definition.
The AI ecosystem is the network of people, technologies, data, and organizations that work together to create, deploy, and regulate artificial intelligence. It includes everything from research and computing tools to real-world applications and ethical oversight.
It sounds like “advancing the AI ecosystem” is basically the same as investing in making sure AI is consistently and efficiently incorporated into their work practices.
Overall, I saw nearly $3 billion in the Big Beautiful Bill associated with AI. I imagine these investments will continue to increase.
