I have made a few posts chronicling the focus of the current White House administration on AI. This week Trump went further by attending the “Winning The AI Race” summit and speaking about America’s AI Action Plan. What is that? Let’s get into it.
What is in America’s AI Action Plan?
The plan has three main objectives
- accelerating innovation through things like reducing regulation and promoting research
- building infrastructure that includes data centers and semiconductor manufacturing facilities
- being a leader internationally by strategically exporting our technology and guiding international governance
The plan also mentions several recently signed executive orders promoting AI
- Promoting the export of the American AI technology stack
- Accelerating federal permitting of data center infrastructure
- Preventing woke AI in the federal government
Why does the president seem to talk about AI so much?
I think the president’s background in business means he has a particular focus on promoting US business, and those businesses being world leaders in industry. A number of CEOs have said that AI is a priority for them and they expect to be implementing AI if they haven’t already. Many believe that if the US (or any country for that matter) does not push towards AI, they will be left behind.
How does this affect me?
AI is a technology that is able to affect all of us. AI has already started taking over a lot of things that humans used to do, and it may end up doing some things we wouldn’t have previously thought of. Maybe you’ve heard of AI chatbots or image generators? Those are really just the beginning. AI is increasingly used to identify suspects for crimes from DMV databases or determining the prices we pay. As AI becomes more and more reliable and powerful, we will have to decide what we are comfortable with AI doing and what we are not. The way in which this administration chooses to make laws about AI will likely affect how it gets implemented here and influence the rest of the world.
