We have to be careful about what we post on the internet, especially social media sites. You never know who is watching you or what their intentions are. One man found himself the victim of a crime due to a fake picture he posted on Facebook. How does that happen? Let’s chat.

What was the fake picture?

Prior to the attack, the victim Anthony McNary posted a picture of stacks of cash on the social media site Facebook. He did this in response to someone calling him broke. The victim really did this just as a prank. It doesn’t seem as though Anthony was directing this post to any of his attackers.

So his attackers thought that the picture was real?

Apparently so. Because two days later, the assailants broke into the victim’s house wearing tactical vests labeled “police” and demanded the cash they saw in the picture from Facebook. They didn’t realize he had just picked an old picture from a Facebook memory.

What happened when they realized the money wasn’t real?

Unfortunately, they didn’t leave right away when Anthony said the post was meant as a joke. They beat, choked, and shot him. Fortunately, Anthony lived to tell the tale.

My thoughts

This story is just one example of many where something posted online incited something else offline. It’s sad that we can’t share or joke on social media without being concerned about who or what is watching and wanting to do something about it in real life. While we all want to have fun online, we must be careful about what we post. We never know who might be looking and what they might be prepared to do.
