The deadline for the Real ID is May 7th, less than a week away. However, don’t panic just yet if you haven’t gotten it. The Real ID deadline only applies for certain situations. But maybe you’ve gotten it and wondered what’s the big deal anyway? Lets look at the tech in the Real ID.
Why do I have to get a Real ID?
The US federal government passed a law in 2005 requiring IDs be developed with nationally establish standards to help prevent things like identity theft and fraud. The ID is mainly needed for access to government buildings and security at the airport for domestic flights. So, if you mainly need an ID for driving or just to prove who you are, you don’t HAVE to get the new Real ID.
However, it is highly recommend you go ahead and get it. You never know. You might find yourself needing one suddenly. If you find yourself in a bind, you can use a passport or some other limited forms of ID instead of the Real ID.
Where can I get the Real ID?
Each state is issuing its own version of the Real ID and some states have their own standards. So be sure to check with you local Department of Motor Vehicles or identification issuing agency to understand what is needed.
What is so special about the Real ID?
The Real ID includes features like a standardized bar code, holograms, raised text, and areas that respond to UV light. They also have specialized features that aren’t easily discernible by the average user. Typically, someone would need specialized equipment to detect these more advanced security features that aren’t publicly revealed.
Additionally, some states allow mobile driver’s licenses (mDL) on your smart phone that are Real ID compliant.
