When I started this blog, I did not envision reviewing movies. Yet, here we are. Well, its not exactly a blockbuster movie, but an educational movie, a documentary really . The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist (2026) premiered recently in theaters, and I had the opportunity to watch it. So what’s up with the documentary? Let’s discuss!
What is the documentary about?
The documentary is told from the perspective of the main filmmaker, Daniel Roher, as he considers the future potential of AI while navigating the idea his growing family. Much of the film is a series of interviews of well-known AI experts. They discuss what AI is, the downsides or scary parts, and the positive possibilities. Then the promise and peril of AI is discussed in balance. For example, AI technology could enable the best possible education for all children by customizing lessons to their learning style. This same AI technology could be used to learn all about children with the purpose of manipulating them.
Why did you watch this movie?
I don’t remember right now how I first heard about the movie. As a futurist and tech enthusiast, I was really interested in what this documentary might discuss. I also thought the word “apocaloptimist” was interesting as it seems to describe my own feelings of being simultaneously excited and dreadful of what AI could lead to in society.
Should I watch it?
If you really want a good idea of some of the issues discussed by leaders in the AI field, including some CEOs, then yes. Don’t worry, its not real technical. Its more about impending societal issues. I tried to watch this when it first premiered so I could review it while it was still in theaters, but I had to rearrange my schedule. I was finally able to see it the last day it was available near me. It may still be in some theaters, so check your local listings. I have also seen that it will be or is available on some streaming platforms.
